Hitoshinaya

Interview

Japan Commercial Environmental Design Association (JCD) Review

Hitoshinaya is a Japanese traditional restaurant facing the departure lobby of Haneda Airport’s Terminal 1. It constitutes one dining facility comprised of three specialized restaurants. They connect to one another along each of the restaurant’s eaves, creating a refreshing impression of a streetscape amidst a chaotic terminal. Townhouse elements such as the rhythm of sequencing eaves, the floating of noren—fabric dividers—at the entrance, or traditional Kyoto-style low fences fitted in front of the establishment are expressed with elegant simplicity. The only material used is wood, which emits an air of purity to the terminal where so many people cross paths.
